Qigong for Health, Vitality, and Longevity

About

Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that promotes health, vitality, and longevity through a holistic approach. Having been developed and enhanced for thousands of years, Qigong integrates elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine, martial arts, and Taoist philosophy. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the practice of Qigong, offering guidance for individuals seeking to embark on a transformative journey toward a balanced and harmonious life. At the heart of Qigong is the concept of qi, or life energy, which is fundamental in achieving harmony in body, mind, and spirit. The practice of Qigong incorporates movement, breath, and intention to ensure a free flow of qi throughout the body. By adhering to the principles and practices outlined in this book, readers can unlock the potential of Qigong to enhance their overall health and well-being.
This book is structured in two parts: the first section explains essential concepts, including the significance of
qi and presenting proper breathing techniques, as well as introducing the meridian system and the ancient Chinese lifestyle system known as Yangsheng Gong. The second section is dedicated to the actual practice of Qigong, focusing primarily on Medical Qigong, which is aimed at enhancing health, increasing vitality, and extending longevity. This section includes detailed instructions for performing ten common Medical Qigong routines along with addressing the topics of self-touch acupressure, cane massage, and seated and standing meditation. Each chapter in this section offers practical instruction for both novice and intermediate practitioners, ensuring that readers can effectively incorporate the practice of Qigong into their daily lives. Of the ten Qigong routines presented in this book, eight were developed or modified for ease of instruction by Dr. Jesse Tsao, who is a Taijiquan Grandmaster and received his doctorate in Tai Chi and Qigong education from Shanghai University of Sport. Dr. Tsao also developed the self-touch acupressure system and cane massage routine presented in this book.
In addition to core principles, this book elaborates on the benefits of understanding and cultivating
qi, emphasizing the importance of employing both movement and breath in directing energy flow throughout the body. In order to accommodate readers of different skill levels and experience, a variety of Qigong routines are presented, ranging from the gentle, easy-to-perform movements of the Eight Pieces of Brocade to more dynamic routines like the Five Animal Frolics. Throughout this book, readers are encouraged to explore these practices and find the ones that resonate with their own personal wellness journey.
